People of Substance series

Kelli Herbert - continued

M2H - Contending with society's definition of the body beautiful is not so easy when you're a person of size. How do you deal with this?

Kelli - Times are changing...Plus Modeling is on the rise and full figured models and actresses like Emme, Anna Nicole Smith and Camryn Manheim are getting a lot of media attention which is wonderful. As a matter of fact, the average woman in the US a size 14. People are tired of seeing bone thin, unhealthy, unrealistic women in print. Let's face it…Some women are a size three and some are never meant to be. Personally, at 5'11” I feel healthy and comfortable at a size 16, which is what I am trying to get back to now.

As I mentioned, the public view point is shifting. When people find out that I am trying to break into plus modeling they encourage me by saying, “Good for you, it's about time we saw more full figured models on television and in magazines.” I've received a great deal of encouragement from my family, friends, coworkers and associates.

I do my part by staying positive and motivating the people that I come in contact with. It's a amazing what a little attention, positive reinforcement and encouragement can do for someone's self esteem…You should try it sometime. Imagine what society would be like if everyone took time out to compliment even one person each day.

M2H - What advice would you pass on to others about being successful and or achieving their goals?

Kelli - Stay positive, stay focused and believe in yourself. Set a goal and stick to it. Start with small victories and work up to the big ones. That way they are measurable and achievable.

Look to your friends and family for the love, support and encouragement that you need to keep you motivated to succeed. I motivate and encourage others by being myself, genuinely caring about people and encouraging them every chance that I get. Find the good in everyone and compliment people as often as possible. I talk to them and I listen. It's amazing how a simple smile can brighten someone's day...Try it sometime!
